Team owners in Microsoft Teams now have the ability to rename the default General channel. This update addresses long-standing user feedback, allowing for more meaningful and personalized channel names that better reflect the purpose of your team. Here’s a quick guide on how to make this change, along with key details you should be aware of.

Steps for Renaming the General Channel

  1. Open Microsoft Teams and navigate to the team that contains the General channel you wish to rename.
  2. Locate the General channel in the list of channels and click on the (ellipsis) to open the context menu.
  3. Select Rename channel from the menu.
  1. Enter a new name for the channel in the Channel name field and click Save.

Here’s a video demonstration of these steps.

Important Things to Know:

  • No Going Back: Once renamed, you cannot revert the channel name back to “General.” The name “General” becomes a reserved word and cannot be reused for any channel within Teams.
  • Impact on SharePoint: When you rename the General channel, the corresponding folder in SharePoint (where documents for the channel are stored) will also be renamed automatically.
  • Alphabetical Order: After renaming, the channel will appear in alphabetical order with the other channels in the team. This can help declutter and organize your channels.
  • Applies to New Teams: If you’re creating a new team, you can also assign a custom name to the first channel right at the time of creation. This channel, like the renamed General channel, cannot be archived or deleted.

Tips & Gotchas:

  • Reserved Name: Keep in mind that once you rename the channel, no one else in the team can create a new channel named “General.” This is a permanent restriction.
  • Permissions: Only team owners can perform this action, so make sure you have the necessary permissions before attempting to rename the channel.
  • Preview Features: This feature is available to users in the Public Preview and Targeted Release environments. If you’re not seeing the option yet, it might still be rolling out to your tenant.

Renaming the General channel gives team owners more flexibility and personalization options. While it’s a welcome update, be mindful of the restrictions around reverting the name and the implications for SharePoint folder names.
